Rakka (2017)

Premise: So, at some point aliens invaded and ooops, they won. Too bad, too bad, they’re now uh alienaforming earth and maybe only this plucky resistance movement will be able to do something and fight the overwhelmingly more powerful invader?

Under 90 minutes? It’s about twentysomething minutes! Blink and it’s over!
Do they say the title? Nah, not this time.

First thing I thought of:

Okay, more: Yeah, I mean. Given Mr Blomkamp’s background, and just like in the all-time great District 9 (and in a sense the very flawed but still entertaining Elysium), the parallels to certain events are very very hard to ignore. Sure, it’s from 2017 so way before the Gaza war, but this feels really relevant considering there’s a genocide happening right now. Well, not just one, but one that is being very blatantly pushed by an overwhelming force. What an unfortunate coincidence, huh. Also the visual effects are (as always with these movies for some reason) simply amazing, the story doesn’t overstay its welcome and hey, that’s Sigourney Weaver!

A simple way to improve it: ah, I enjoyed the weird bomb-making dude, maybe a bit more of screentime there.

Trivia about the IMDb trivia:

When Neil Blomkamp’s Alien sequel was canceled, Sigourney Weaver asked what he was up to. After reading the script she asked to play Jasper. According to Blomkamp the Jasper part was originally written for a man. Coincidentally, so was Weaver’s role of Ripley in the Alien franchise.

(the joke is that he’s called Jasper too)
