Subservience (2024)

Premise: Someone watched M3GAN and they were like “oh, I’ll do you one better, what if M3GAN but played by Megan Fox (get it?) and also she’s Megan Fox and not an ultracreepy robot? Also blabla the usual deal with any fiction involving robots becoming self aware, plus some attempt at social commentary and class struggle and uh… yeah

Under 90 minutes? Nah.
Do they say the title? Nope!

First thing I thought of:

not the most creative writing here

Okay, more: Well, that was bad! It felt kinda too sleazy, not self aware enough although i’m sure whoever wrote this felt super smart about the M3GAN/Megan thing on the casting, and they also thought they were making some very thoughtful points about dehumanization and how it feels so easy to replace human creativity with robots or whatever. Then they pointed the camera at Megan Fox in lingerie.
But yeah this movie is really bad, it is as subtle as a brick to the face. There’s some seriously creepy vibe too when you realize that at some point someone went “i like the creepy robot doll movie, but what if she wasn’t a kid, and was sexy instead?” and nobody told them “you’re both kind of missing the point and seriously creeping me out”.

A simple way to improve it: just a year later Companion was a way better watch that knew how seriously it should take itself (hint: not at all). Maybe realize your movie is not deep, it’s the opposite of that?

Trivia about the IMDb trivia:

Madeline Zima, who plays the wife in Subservience, previously played the daughter in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, a film with similar plot elements (minus the robots).

Okay the timing there took me completely off guard. Good job!
