VHS 85 (2023)

Premise: Okay, so the V/H/S marathon continues and this time it’s 198X, or more specifically 1985! This time around we have a bunch of kids swimming at the lake, an earthquake in Mexico, some avant garde theatre, a sort-of-a-quinceañera, the world’s greatest Siouxsie fan and the frame narrative is about this weird mushroom thing. Kinda like the Super Mario Bros movie from 1993.

Under 90 minutes? no, but hear me out: i didn’t even notice this time.
Do they say the title? Nah. Well I mean, they keep mentioning the year, does that count?

First thing I thought of:

Okay, more: I… am kind of speechless. True fans of this, your favourite blog, know that if there’s a guilty pleasure genre we like it is found footage, if there’s a format we love here it is anthologies (because in the end that means “it’s a series of short films/stories and if this one doesn’t work the next one will”), and the next song is about shooting blood out of y-
But, seriously, this is the sixth movie in the series, this is the point where usually most horror franchises go to hell (not laudatory), and yet… I don’t think there was a single “weak short” on this one. They’re all bangers, Brent. Extremely recommended!

A simple way to improve it: I kinda want to know a bit more about both the “kids at the lake” and “weird family celebrating something” ones. That and really, Netflix should do a short series about the metroymedio detective and his plucky goth assistant.

Trivia about the IMDb trivia:

In one scene, classic footage of the band GWAR can be seen for a few seconds.

The band Gwar is shown for a few seconds in between sections, but the band member shown was not in the band in 1985. Even though Gwar was formed in 1984, Balsac The Jaws of Death was not a member until 1988. The costume did not exist yet in 1985.
